See the Big 5 in the Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania has a curious feel to it. The collapsed volcano covers an area of 260 square kilometres hosting a wide section of African wildlife including the Big 5. The crater is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation area that is also home to the red-robed Maasai. Passing over the crater wall and finding these surreal landscapes and abundant wildlife almost feels like entering another world.
Ngorongoro Wildlife
The Ngorongoro Crater is not only home to large numbers of ungulates, but also a large number of predators. In fact Ngorongoro is known to have the largest density of mammalian predators and especially lions in all of Africa. Due to the favourable conditions in the crater the black-maned lions of Ngorongoro grow particularly large in size.
When in the crater also watch out for the critically endangered black rhinoceros. The large mammal, almost poached to extinction, has become a rare sight. Elephants and leopards in the montane forests and large herds of African buffalo complete the Big 5.
The plains are dominated by large herds of ungulates such as wildebeest, zebra and various gazelle.
Surreal Landscapes
The collapse of a large volcano created this unique wildlife area. The world’s largest volcanic caldera has montane forests, a lake, vast open plains and steep rock walls. The elevated view from the crater rim is something to behold and game drive in this area can easily include sighting of up to 12 species within the first few hours.
Occasionally you will see Maasai herdsmen moving their cattle over the volcanic rock and onto the grasslands of the Ngorongoro crater. If you want to add a cultural touch to your safari, a day with the amazing Maasai people is great thing to incorporate into your travels.
