Photographic Hides

Derek Shenton, the owner of Shenton Safaris, has designed several photographic hides to get the visitors of his safari lodge incredibly close to the African wildlife. The hides were constructed with photography in mind and have met much acclaim from professionals and amateurs alike. The abundant wildlife of South Luangwa and Shenton’s photographic hides have been featured by the National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Africa Geographic and the BBC.

Situated in strategic positions by highly frequented waterholes, the hides are provide a safe haven among some of the planets largest mammals, disguising the photographer and giving him the opportunity to capture the raw beauty of the African wildlife.

The hippo hide has been featured prominently in the BBC’s Wild Africa series, where you can see a large crocodile attacking the throat of an unsuspecting African Buffalo. The hippo hide is situated at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwamba rivers. Here the hippopotamus show of their large jaws in hundred and the resident crocodile snatches oxpeckers from the hippos’ back.

The elephant hide is perched high up in ancient African trees overlooking an elephant highway that has led generations of the large mammals to the river. Watch these fascinating creatures play in the mud and quench their thirst from the safety of the treetops. For an extra-exclusive experience Shenton Safaris offer sleep outs in the elephant hide, where you can observe all the nocturnal activities at the river and wake up to the sounds of the African bush.

Avid birders love the Carmine Bee-eater Hide. The photographic hide floats on the river right among the huge colonies of these stunningly beautiful birds. When the swarms buzz along the river banks your lens will be covered in the most vivid colours, allowing you to take amazing photographs of this spectacular bird.

Mwamba’s Last Waterhole Hide is situated right where the action is. The waterhole gets particularly busy during the dry season when the full array of African wildlife can be seen throughout the day.
