Visit Victoria Falls

The magnitude of the Victoria Falls is hard to describe. Just the facts are impressive. The waterfall on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe is the world’s largest sheet of falling water. Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders), as the falls are also known, is 1,708 metres wide and 108 metres high. Vic Falls is a World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders. In rainy season the spray of the falling water can be seen from up to 50km away. As impressive as these features are, there is nothing quite like witnessing the falling water in action and actually feeling the spray.

Vic Falls Activities

The Zimbabwean Town of Victoria Falls has the better view of the waterfall, but due to the political situation the momentum is swinging over to the Zambian town of Livingstone. Livingstone, named after the British explorer, offers a range of activities that ranges from gentle cruises to bungee jumping and white water rafting. The Zambian side also offers great views from Knife Edge Bridge. Don’t miss a swim in Devil’s Pool – a natural pool on the very edge of the falls. Many say Mosi-oa-Tunya can only be appreciated from a bird’s eye view.

Other activities include:

  • Helicopter flights
  • Bungee jumping
  • Canoeing the Zambezi
  • Gorge Swing
  • White water rafting
  • Sunset cruises
  • Elephant back safaris

Livingstone is also an African tourism hub of note, welcoming overland trucks and luxury travellers alike. Vic Falls is a great place to meet other travellers. The solid infrastructure also makes Victoria Falls a good place to start or end your travels in Southern Africa.

With all these activities to do and other travellers to meet it is easy to forget what actually turned the town of Livingstone into one of Africa’s largest tourist hubs – a waterfall of stunning power and beauty. So whatever else you do – take a moment to appreciate this geological wonder.
